Experience:
I was first introduced to care giving when a close friend was diagnosed with breast cancer, underwent surgery and chemotherapy, then the road to reconstruction when more cancer was found and finally the death process.
My Father had colon surgery, was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. Took an extended leave of absence from my job. Cared for my dad who died in my home in 1997 with the help of Hospice.
Early retirement from my job as an Allstate Agent for 26 years, moved to Oregon in 1998 and started a personal assistant/care giving Custom Care business. This ranged from cleaning to the complete responsibility of closing up, packing and moving a client.
Three months of care for an acquaintance who had surgery. A stroke patient didn't have anyone to help her and needed assistance with general living needs including meals, medication, and other decisions until proper living arrangements could be made.
Provided extra support and help for an elderly couple for the past six years including transportation from Bandon VA to Roseburg VA for help with dementia and failure to thrive issues. This included conflict resolution, spouse's support issues, and regular contact with an out of state son, handling phone calls, shopping, and other aging issues. It also includes home maintenance supervision and yard work.
2002: My mother came to live with me needing care as a stroke and dementia patient. I hired help to continue my work and care for my mother in my home until her death with the help of Hospice.
2003: Worked for a family across the street. The idea for Care Giving Rentals took shape. This elderly couple included the wife with severe emphysema and a husband unable to meet all her needs; cooking, cleaning, washing, companionship, personal care needs, medication assistance, doctor visits, emergency room and hospital visits and eventually, end of life with hospice in 2004
2005: Purchased the duplex across the street from our home and started the remodeling process. Care Giving Rentals was open in June. I had experienced all the benefits of care giving for my client and myself from right across the street, adding security for the clients as I was only a phone call away. This allowed the elderly couple to stay in their home even though the husband was unable to care for his wife himself. |
